Online banking: What is the iTAN procedure?
The early days of online banking took place via the so-called TAN procedure. In this process, the customer received a list by mail from his bank with a predefined set of transaction numbers. When confirming a banking transaction via online banking, one of these numbers was used chronologically and crossed out. However, this procedure is very insecure.
What is iTAN in online banking? How the procedure works
iTAN stands for "Indexed Transaction Number" and already describes in the naming the difference to the conventional procedure. With the indexed list, the user does not know beforehand which transaction number is required.- With the indexed list, you no longer have the option of using any TAN and thus confirming a transaction.
- The system now gives you a position in the list behind which the TAN is hidden that you must enter for confirmation.
- About this way you avoid vulnerability, because phishing of TAN lists is now no longer so easy.
- Even if the procedure is much more secure than the conventional TAN list, the process is still far from being able to compete with more modern TAN procedures.
