Ubuntu: Insert Emojis - how it works

After an update to Ubuntu version 18.04, the colorful emojis are also available in the popular Linux operating system. In which programs you can use emojis and how to insert the symbols, we explain in this article.

These emojis are used by Ubuntu

For a long time, on computers running Ubuntu, you could only use the funny emojis if you had previously installed additional software on the computer. Since the update to Ubuntu version 18.04, the Noto Color Emojis are now a permanent part of Ubuntu and are no longer available in black and white, but in color. However, the use of emojis is only possible in native programs of Ubuntu and not in programs like LibreOffice or Firefox.

How to insert emojis in your documents under Ubuntu

In most programs installed under Ubuntu, the insertion of emojis is possible via text input. For example, if you want to insert an emoji character into a text document, please first open the word processor on Ubuntu.
  1. In the opened word processor, then right-click on a free space and select "Insert Emoticon" from the context menu.
