Excel: Round function - how to get the correct value

The Excel spreadsheet program from the Microsoft Office package offers various functions that make your workday easier. Among them is the round function, which allows you to round a given value to within one digit. To do this, all you have to do is call the function.

How does the round function work in Excel?

A number can be rounded in different ways in Excel. Exactly how this is done depends on your settings. The process is accomplished in a few steps.
  1. First you need to select the cell in which later a rounded number should be and enter a dummy number in it.
  2. Now click at the top of the bar on "Start", in the category on "Number" and then on "Add decimal place".
  3. Now you see that the number is extended by one decimal place. If you want to remove it again, just click on "Delete decimal place".
  4. You now have several options to round a number.
  5. If you want to round up a number, write in a cell "=Round Up(Number, Number of digits)" and replace "Number" with the number you want to round and "Number of digits" with the number of decimal places the number should have.
  6. The same works with "=Round Down(Number, Number of digits)". Of course, you can also just use the "=Round(number, number of digits)" function. This simply rounds up to the next value, depending on whether above 0.5 or below 0.5.
