MacOS: Install Mojave - the most important things at a glance

Apple offers you a new, improved version of its operating system. The fifth variant is called Mojave and is available to all Apple users free of charge. However, you should know all the factors before deciding whether to install it or not.

What to know about Mojave

A new operating system means not only that you will experience improvements, but also that you will have to deal with compatibility and possible problems. These versions are compatible with the update:
  • MacBook as of spring 2015
  • MacBook Air as of mid-2012
  • MacBook Pro as of mid-2012
  • Mac mini as of fall 2012
  • iMac as of fall 2012
  • iMac Pro as of 2017
  • Mac Pro as of fall 2013 or all with Metal-enabled graphics card
  • All products that come with at least OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion are equipped
You can easily download via the App Store, as it is free of charge. Especially for older models, you must be prepared for the installation to take several hours. If you own a MacBook that uses a Fusion Drive, hard drive utilities can become a problem. You should also be prepared for compatibility issues with audio software.

Back up your data

No matter which version you use, you should definitely back up your data before updating. For this, you can create a boot stick or use TimeMaschine to preserve all your data. Only afterwards should you update to macOS Mojave.
