Vocktails, virtual cocktails created with your smartphone

A team of experts from the National University of Singapore has created a special 3D-printed glass that can turn water into chocolate

The National University of Singapore has been working to create Vocktails, virtual cocktails. This particular drink made with the help of technology is able to stimulate the drinker's senses, including sight, smell and taste. The electronic drink is made entirely through 3D printing.

The Vocktail is nothing more than a drink served in a glass printed with the help of a 3D printer. The container is interactive and has a number of applications that stimulate the user's senses. The aim is to recreate flavors not present in the cocktail or to amplify the taste of those already present. The tumbler has three cartridges which contain fragrances and has small compressed air tubes which are used to spray aromas into the air and alter our perception of taste. On the bottom of the glass, micro LED lights alter the natural color of the drink to partially trick our eyes.

Virtual cocktails

The 3D printed glass also has two silver electrodes in the rim. So as we place our lips on the glass the electrodes stimulate our taste buds with acidic, sour, bitter or sweet flavors based on the type of cocktail we chose. Lab tests in Singapore confirmed that the combination of stimulation of smell, sight and taste in unison altered the perceived taste of the drink in volunteers. Overall most of the people who tried Vocktails were satisfied and found the drink tasted better, despite the fact it was identical to a classic cocktail. The Vocktails in addition to using the particular 3D printed glass rely on an application for smartphones. Through this program it is possible to change the color of the drink, share a cocktail with friends, or change the aromas and stimulations of the electrodes via Bluetooth.

Vocktails and diets

In addition to being quite a trendy object Vocktails could come in very handy to help people on a diet. We could, for example, put simple water in the glass and thanks to the aromas give it a sweet taste of chocolate or other drinks. All without taking additional calories.
