Elon Musk had announced on Twitter the idea of installing solar cells on top of Tesla cars: what seemed like a boutade will become reality thanks to Panasonic
When a few months ago Elon Musk announced on Twitter the hypothesis of including in future Tesla models a roof with solar panels to power the car while it is in motion, many have turned up their noses. The technology didn't seem suitable for this purpose, yet the new Panasonic panels could revolutionize everything.
Musk had spoken of a solar roof on the new Tesla Model 3. A technology that could power the car while driving it. An option that would surely revolutionize the practicality of the electric car. For many, however, given the capabilities of current solar panels, the hypothesis was completely out of reality. With such a system, the vehicle could only travel a few miles. Earlier this week, however, Panasonic unveiled a new kind of technology, a solar panel designed for cars. A game-changing device.
HITPhotovoltaic Module for Automobile
HITPhotovoltaic Module for Automobile, that's the long and complicated name of the new solar panel for cars designed by Panasonic. It's a technology currently exclusive to the Toyota Prius PHV, but it could soon be adopted on other models as well. Panasonic's press release says: Panasonic solar cells have a unique structure that combines a crystalline silicon substrate and an amorphous silicon film, enabling excellent performance. Currently, solar cells are only used on cars to charge some accessories. Panasonic cells, installed on the roof, allow the car to move and save fuel.
