Teresa controls itself remotely and is able to perform some tasks in semi-autonomy. In the future, it may be used in schools, homes and hospitals
Europe is also very active when it comes to the production of robots. A group of researchers from the old continent has developed Teresa, an intelligent robot that one day could replace us in many situations.
One of the main features of Teresa is precisely the remote assistance. The goal of the robot's creators was to create a device that could replicate the human being. The intelligent device is, in fact, controllable by a computer thanks to some technical specifications that include cameras and microphones. Compared to traditional telepresence systems - which normally stop only at the static aspect of communication - the robot can be used on those occasions when human interaction is necessary. But there's more. According to the authors of the project, Teresa is able to perform some tasks autonomously.
Features of Teresa
Teresa, as seen, is an intelligent robot. The group talks about social intelligence. The device made in Europe will in fact be able to move between people, maintain face-to-face contact and assume typically human attitudes. Scientists from 4 European countries are working on the project and it is funded by the European Union. Teresa's base is represented by Giraff, a rotating telepresence system consisting of a large screen. In addition to the elements needed to perform video conferencing, Teresa integrates a number of smart sensors that allow the robot to move around semi-autonomously, including a gyroscope, a Kinect sensor and two rangefinders sensors.
Possible uses
The robot lends itself to being used in multiple situations. As Teresa's authors suggest, the robot will be able to be used in the home, schools, hospitals and all places where human interaction is required. Technology, therefore, is increasingly active in seeking solutions capable of bringing people together, even if they are miles apart. Google, for example, has a drone in the pipeline that could go to work in our place in the future.
