Connecting a monitor to a laptop

To connect a laptop and a monitor, all you need is a suitable cable. Most devices have a DVI port and an HDMI port. If your laptop has a USB-C port, there is also the option of using an adapter from USB-C to HDMI.

How to connect monitor and laptop

Having the right cable or adapter at hand, proceed as follows:
  1. Plug an HDMI or DVI cable into your monitor.
  2. Connect the cable to the laptop or with the adapter and this to the laptop.
  3. Start the laptop and turn on the monitor.
  4. Click on a free space on the desktop of your laptop with the right mouse button.
  5. Select "Screen Resolution" in the context menu.
  6. In the dialog window that opens, the screen of your laptop is displayed.
  7. Click "Detect" under it.
  8. Next to the screen of your laptop, the second monitor is now displayed.
  9. Click on the second screen. You can now adjust the resolution and other settings.
  10. Select which monitor belongs to your laptop.
  11. Check the option "Use this monitor as main monitor" at the desired monitor.
In the same dialog box, you can also determine whether both monitors or only one should be used. The "Mirror" option means that both monitors will display the same image. You can also select "Show on 1 only" or "Show on 2 only".
