How do I change the quotation marks in Word?

Microsoft offers numerous programs to help you with daily office tasks. Word is one of the most popular text editing programs, as it stands out mainly because of its various functions. With Word, it is possible to design your document according to your wishes and, for example, use different quotation marks.

How to change the quotation marks in Word

Quotation marks are used for different purposes. For example, you can mark a direct speech or abbreviations. If you want to write a text in different languages, you need different quotation marks depending on the language. Usually, Word automatically detects the language and adjusts the arrangement of the quotation marks accordingly. However, you can change this via settings.
  1. To do this, switch to the "File" tab at the top of Word.
  2. Then select the "Options" item.
  3. In the new window, you have various options to choose from on the left-hand side. Click on "Document validation".
  4. Then click on the "AutoCorrect options" button.
  5. A window opens again, where you switch to the "AutoFormat as you type" tab.
  6. Here you can now make any changes regarding the quotation marks. For example, if you select "typographic", they will always be set at the top, while "straight" will alternate between top and bottom.
  7. Once you have made all the changes, confirm them by clicking "OK". They will then be applied directly.
