With the new Sony Xperia 1 III and 5 III debuts, for the first time ever on a smartphone, a camera with variable focal length: with only 12 MP will give a hard time to all.
A photographic department never seen before, but also a lot of power thanks to the best SoC available on the market and, even an eye to gaming. You don't really know where to start when describing the new Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III presented today by Sony. In order not to be wrong, it's better to start by saying that they are the first smartphones in the world with a telephoto lens with variable focal length.
In recent months we have seen numerous collaborations, official or only hypothesized, between smartphone manufacturers and big names in the photography industry such as Leica, Hasselblad, Olympus. Sony is one of the world leaders in photo sensors and, with its Sony Alpha range, also in professional digital cameras.
Sony Xperia 1 III e 5 III
- 12 MP, f/1,7, autofucus Dual PDAF, stabilizzatore ottico
- 12 MP ultra grandangolare, f/2,2, autofucus dual PDAF
- 12 MP teleobiettivo, 70+105mm, f/2,3-f/2,8, autofucus dual PDAF, optical stabilizer
These three rear lenses are joined by the 3D iToF sensor on the Xperia 1 III and, on both, an 8 MP front camera. All lenses are made by Germany's Carl Zeiss.
As for the telephoto lens, however, it should be specified that it has two different focal lengths (70 mm and 105 mm) and that there is an electric motor inside the lens that allows you to change length, with all intermediate focal lengths being interpolated via software instead.
Managing much of the calculations is the dedicated Bionz X processor, the same one found on many Sony Alpha series DSLR and mirrorless cameras.
New Xperia III range, other features
In addition to the cameras the new Sony Xperia 1 III and 5 III also make themselves appreciated for the rest of the data sheet. Like all major top of the range 2021 have the SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, while like all Sony Xperia models have an excellent OLED display: 6.5-inch, with 4K resolution and 120 Hz refresh on the Xperia 1 III and 6.1-inch FHD and 120 Hz on the Xperia 5 III.
In the battery we find a further difference between the two models: it is always 4.500mAh and with 30 Watt fast charging, but the Xperia 1 III also has wireless and reverse charging.
New Xperia III range, when it arrives and how much they cost
Both the two new top of the range Sony will arrive in early summer, so we'll have to wait to see them live. Prices have not yet been communicated, but with features like that they can not be cheap devices.
