Android Oreo official: here’s what changes

With a presentation of a few minutes Google has removed the veil to the new version of the operating system: it will officially be Android Oreo

Google has taken advantage of the hype of the solar eclipse that has invested the entire United States to present the new version of its mobile operating system. After months of indiscretions and rumors finally the name has been made official, the eighth version of the OS will be Android Oreo. After Android KitKat, Google again uses the name of a cake belonging to a private company.

Very short presentation that organized by Google: just the time to show a video of a few minutes in which it was announced the name Android Oreo. A short presentation that could have also been caused by a technical glitch: in fact, the official Android 8.0 website has been unreachable for a while and users who have a compatible smartphone could not download the new version of the operating system. Here are all the new features of Android 8.0 Oreo.

Restrictions on background apps

In recent years, one of Google's main goals has been to increase the battery life of Android smartphones. In many cases, the blame for high battery consumption is caused by poor optimization between the software and hardware parts. With Android Oreo, Google has tried to improve battery life by working directly on background apps, i.e. apps that stay open even if the user is not using them. Most of the battery consumption is caused by background apps and with Android 8.0 Oreo Google has limited their "power". This will allow software houses to develop less "ravenous" apps.

Notification Management

After the restructuring work started with Android Nougat, with Android 8.0 notifications completely change face. The user will be able to collect them within thematic channels, so you can manage them more easily. In addition, you will be able to postpone a notification: for example, if you receive a message on WhatsApp, you will be able to decide to mute the notification for 15, 30 or 60 minutes.

API for auto-fills

Auto-fill is one of the features we use every day but few people know about. If when we enter an online service that requires username and password we don't enter anything because the browser suggests it to us automatically, it's thanks to auto-fill. With Android Oreo this feature will find even more support and thanks to the API will be extended to almost all applications and browsers.

Picture-in-picture

One of the most requested features by users comes with Android 8.0 Oreo. We're talking about Picture-in-picture, that is, the ability to use two apps simultaneously. It's very simple: if, for example, while you're browsing with your browser you also want to watch a YouTube video, just shrink the screen of the streaming video platform and put it in the corner. Very simple and above all useful.

Text Selection

Android Oreo will also integrate a text selection feature that will allow you to automatically open apps. For example, if you select a phone number, the Contacts app will open. If, on the other hand, you select an address it will activate map navigation.

Google Play Protect

Already available for a few weeks on the Play Store, Google Play Protect officially lands on all smartphones running Android Oreo. It is a new system that protects your smartphone from viruses and malware. The Google Play Protect scans over 50 million apps every day to check if there are any dangerous ones for the user's device.

Emoji, emoji, emoji

With Android 8.0 Oreo will come 60 new emoji that will replace the blobmoji.

Android Oreo: who it's available for

Android 8.0 is already available for the Google Pixel and Nexus 6P. It will also be released for other Google devices in the coming days. For other Android smartphones, however, it will be necessary to wait a couple more months: the various companies will have to develop their version of Android Oreo.
