Game of Thrones, also known in Italy as The Iron Throne, is an American TV series created by David Beniof and D.B. Weiss, and that made its debut on the small screen on the HBO channel in April 2011. Since then, the success has been unstoppable, for what is in fact a television adaptation of the cycle of novels Chronicles of Ice and Fire by writer George R. R. Martin, and that develops in 8 seasons for a total of 73 episodes.
The genre is fantasy: the story revolves around a large number of characters and is set in a vast fictional world consisting of the Western continent, called Westeros, and the Eastern one, Essos; the capital is King's Landing, where the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms is located. The narrative will then see the most powerful and noble families of the continent clash and ally - and betray! -
Game of Thrones: the plot of all seasons
Complex characters and ambiguous nature, along with political, economic and religious games, characterize the plot of Game of Thrones. Against the backdrop of a tight competition for the throne by the noble class, the population is instead harassed by poverty and degraded conditions. Not only that, but the entire civilization is threatened by the arrival of a very unusual winter, which brings with it forgotten legendary creatures and dark magical forces that would be better left to sleep forever.
First season
The Iron Throne opens in the midst of delicate political machinations, which are a prelude to a war in the Seven Kingdoms. Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, is commissioned by his friend and King Robert Baratheon to travel immediately to the capital, King's Landing, to hold the prestigious position of Hand of the King. However, the clash between the Seven Kingdoms and the families that rule them is now imminent, especially because of the aims of the ruthless members of House Lannister.
In the meantime, Jon Snow, the illegitimate son of Eddard Stark, joins the Night's Watch, the centuries-old guardians of the Wall. The Wall is a gigantic wall made of ice, erected to separate the human world from the Lands of Eternal Winter, from which a terrible threat is coming. At the same time, the throne is also coveted by Daenerys Targaryen and her older brother Viserys, the last survivors of the noble House Targaryen, who ruled before Baratheon's revolt.
Second Season
The war between the families of the Seven Kingdoms has now come to a head. Tyrion Lannister unexpectedly exercises the role of Hand of the King to stand alongside the young and inexperienced Joffrey Baratheon as the rightful king of the continent. The boy succeeded his father after the latter died during a hunting trip.
There are, however, other nobles who are convinced they must get their hands on the Iron Throne, including Robb Stark. Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen seeks an army across the sea after establishing herself as the Mother of Dragons. Beyond the Wall, however, Jon Snow and the Night's Watch are preparing for battle with dark forces now forgotten by most of the population.
Third season
While Daenerys tries to raise an army in the lands of Astapor, Jon Snow ends up dealing with the Wildlings' people. The balance in King's Landing, meanwhile, is set to change: the Tyrell family gradually gains more power, trying to get into the good graces of the seemingly invincible Lannister family.
Traveling north, Bran Stark experiences increasingly realistic dreams as he journeys to the Wall, while his sister Arya meets the priest Thoros of Myr and joins the Brotherhood Without Banners. Robb Stark, then, will be the victim of a blood-red betrayal destined to forever change the entire scenario and the already precarious balance between the families at stake for the conquest of the Iron Throne.
Fourth season
In the fourth season of Game of Thrones, the young and arrogant King Joffrey prepares to marry Margaery Tyrell, but is soon murdered. The charge falls on Tyrion, who faces a death sentence. At the Wall, Jon Snow and the Night's Watch prepare to face the wildling army led by Mance Rayder, who is getting closer and closer to the borders of the Seven Kingdoms. In Meereen, instead, Daenerys Targaryen takes over as Queen of the Eastern Lands and rules with her advisors the Bay of Slavers.
Fifth season
After Tywin Lannister's death at the hands of his son Tyrion, who will escape by sailing to Essos, where he will meet Daenerys, in the capital Queen Mother Cersei Lannister tries to maintain control of the crown, now on the head of the young and inexperienced Tommen Baratheon. Aware of the imminent arrival of the Long Night, Jon Snow tries to forge an alliance with the Wildlings. Arriving in Braavos, Arya Stark instead aspires to acquire the powers of the Faceless Men and become an assassin.
Season Six
In King's Landing, Cersei and Jaime Lannister attempt to reunite the royal family to counter the growing power of the High Sparrow, while the war between House Frey and House Tully continues. At the Wall, Ser Davos Seaworth and Lady Melisandre deal with the aftermath of Jon Snow's death, with Bran Stark continuing his training with the Three-Eyed Raven. Daenerys Targaryen meanwhile is a prisoner of Khal Moro, and Tyrion Lannister works with Varys in an attempt to control the city of Meereen, now without a ruler.
Seventh Season
After the death of the last of her children and her adversaries, Cersei Lannister is now the new Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, and she considers an alliance with the new King of the Iron Islands Euron Greyjoy and House Tarly. At Winterfell, Northern King Jon Snow prepares for the inevitable confrontation with the Night King and his army of White Walkers, while Daenerys Targaryen arrives at Dragonstone.
