Laptop: Disable internal microphone - here's how

Many laptops have a microphone integrated in addition to a webcam. Most of the time, it is automatically activated by certain applications, even though you already have a headset or other microphone connected. However, the internal microphone can be permanently disabled.

How to disable the internal microphone

You can disable the internal microphone on your Windows laptop at any time via the Control Panel. This is useful if you are afraid of being eavesdropped on or the microphone activates frequently through applications. Since usually also the sound quality is better with external microphones, it is often not worthwhile to use the internal microphone.

1. First go to the Control Panel of your computer.
2. Here, select the menu item "Hardware and Sound".
3. Then go to the option "Sound" to open another window.
4. Here you can now make various settings under "Recordings".
5. Click with the right mouse button on the internal microphone.
6. Anschließend können Sie in einem Kontextmenü die Option „Deaktivieren“ wählen.
7. Bestätigen Sie Ihre Auswahl mit einem weiteren Klick auf „Ok“.
8. Um das interne Mikrofon wieder zu aktivieren, müssen Sie die Schritte erneut ausführen und abschließend auf „Aktivieren“ klicken.

Beachten Sie, dass das Deaktivieren Ihres Mikrofons über die Software nicht vollständig den Zugriff Dritter auf Ihr Mikrofon verhindern kann. Eine physikalische Sperre lohnt sich hierbei meist mehr.
