Technical specifications from the top of the class, with strengths in the display, artificial intelligence and audio compartment. Will it be able to revive LG's fortunes?
The notch almost seems to have faded into the background. Almost taken for granted. So, in presenting its new top of the range (in an anomalous period, halfway between the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and the IFA in Berlin), LG decides to bet everything on the quality of the display and an audio compartment never seen before on board a smartphone.
Of course, there is no shortage of dual rear cameras, "remote-controlled" by the artificial intelligence algorithms of ThinQ to get perfect shots in any condition, the Snapdragon 845 and the "usual" RAM/storage combo of 4 gigabytes and 64 gigabytes to complete a high-level technical card and in line with the other top of the range of this early 2018. The hope of the South Korean manufacturer is that the technical specifications are enough to reverse the trend of recent years, not exactly positive on the sales front
Technical sheet LG G7 ThinQ
Three strengths of LG's new top of the range: LCD display with brightness of 1000 nits; dual rear camera controlled by ThinQ artificial intelligence (initially introduced with the LG V30) and Boombox audio system, which allows you to increase up to 10 times the volume of the device compared to other smartphones.
Scratching the rind, however, reveals a solid device and perfectly in line, at least in terms of technical features, with the most direct rivals (see Samsung, Apple, Huawei and OnePlus). Underneath the 6.1-inch FullVision display with 19.5:9 ratio and QHD+ resolution (3120 x 1440 pixels) are the Snapdragon 845, 4 gigabytes of RAM and 64 gigabytes of storage space (expandable to 2 terabytes with microSD memory card). This is joined by an audio compartment never seen on board a smartphone so far: the Boombox system uses the internal space of the device as a resonance chamber to enhance bass and achieve a result similar to that of external Bluetooth speakers.
It's also worth noting that the LG G7 ThinQ is the first smartphone to feature a dedicated button for activating Google Assistant and Google Lens: a single press will activate the Google voice assistant; a double press will activate the object recognition tool; a long press, finally, allows you to record the voice command for Assistant.
Photography compartment LG G7 ThinQ
The other strong point, as mentioned, is the ThinQ artificial intelligence that helps to always take perfect photos. The dual rear camera consists of two 16-megapixel sensors, the first with f/1.9 super wide-angle aperture and the second with f/1.6 aperture; the 8-megapixel front-facing camera with f/1.9 aperture has an 80° viewing angle for wide-angle selfies. Rounding out the LG G7 ThinQ's photo compartment are several software features such as Live Photos (the camera records a before-and-after shot to create micro movies), Stickers (facial recognition allows you to add 2D and 3D stickers to the subjects of your shots) and Portrait Mode (bokeh effect for professional close-ups).
LG G7 ThinQ price and release date
