The series Altered Carbon has been cancelled by Netflix after just two seasons: too high production costs
Netflix has cancelled the series Altered Carbon after just two seasons and doesn't seem to have any second thoughts. Fans hoping for a third season will have to resign themselves, as the TV series is just the latest among those cancelled in recent times by the streaming platform.
The news of Altered Carbon's cancellation follows that of The Society and I Am Not Okay With This series due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As for Altered Carbon, Netflix let it be known that the decision was made back in April and is not related to the pandemic, but only to a standard review process that compares the number of viewers versus the cost to produce. If many of the fans welcomed the cancellation with disappointment, some instead on social networks admitted that the second season had disappointed their expectations.
Altered Carbon, the plot
Altered Carbon is a cyberpunk television series set in a future where technology, artificial intelligence and cyberspace allow the transfer of consciousness into different bodies. It is a screenplay created by Laeta Kalogridis and based on the novel of the same name by British author Richard K. Morgan. The protagonist of the series is Takeshi Kovacs, a former soldier played in the first season by Joel Kinnaman and in the second season by Anthony Mackie. The second season that streamed on Netflix was set 30 years after the conclusion of the first, and Private Kovacs was the sole surviving soldier of a group of interstellar warriors, who continues to search for his lost love Quellcrist Falconer.
Altered Carbon cancelled: the reason
Although at first it was thought that the reason was the Covid-19 pandemic, as with other Netflix original series including The Society, the website Deadline explains that the cancellation was decided as early as last April. The streaming platform would not have found a sufficient audience to guarantee the costs of a new season. It's a common fate for Altered Carbon with that of two other expensive Netflix sci-fi series cancelled in their second season, such as The OA and Sense8.
