Nowadays you can buy excellent high-resolution and large Smart TVs at very affordable prices, but at what distance should they be positioned to enjoy the highest quality?
With the arrival on the market of Smart TVs of increasingly large and cheap sizes, a new problem has arisen: that of positioning the television in the room where it will be watched. A problem that has always existed, it is true, but that is much more difficult to solve with TVs over 75 inches that are almost six feet wide.
The problem is twofold: on the one hand we have to find where to put the television so that it is placed in a stable manner, does not receive direct sunlight (which would disturb the vision with reflections) and is close to an electrical outlet, on the other hand we must choose the right distance between the TV and the point from which we will watch it, which is usually the sofa. This last factor is very important: an excellent Smart TV will not be seen well if the distance is too long or too short. In the first case we won't be able to see all the details, especially at higher resolutions, in the second one we could have neck or eyesight problems due to the wrong position. Here's how to choose the right distance between TV and viewer, according to TV manufacturers themselves.
Where to put the TV according to Panasonic
One of the companies that offers the most detailed information on the ideal distance between Smart TV and viewer is Panasonic. The Japanese electronics giant recommends a different distance depending on the resolution and size of the TV: the higher the size, the closer the distance should be, while the higher the resolution, the closer we should be.
Per fortuna Panasonic dichiara anche tre valori di riferimento che semplificano tutto: per le TV a risoluzione standard SD bisogna moltiplicare le dimensioni in centimetri della diagonale (ricordandosi che 1 pollice equivale a 2,45 centimetri) per il valore di 3,5; nel caso delle TV a risoluzione HD bisogna moltiplicare la diagonale per 2,5 e, infine, per le TV 4K bisogna moltiplicare la diagonale per 1,5. Ecco qualche esempio:

Le informazioni fornite da Panasonic sono molto precise ma hanno un difetto: le dimensioni della televisione non cambiano, ma la risoluzione sì visto che non tutti i programmi sono trasmessi in SD, HD o 4K ed è molto probabile che nel corso della giornata un telespettatore veda programmi con almeno due risoluzioni diverse. E’ vero che la TV calcolerà i pixel in più, ma è altrettanto vero che vedere un contenuto in HD su una televisione 4K è molto diverso dal vedere un video in 4K reali.
Dove mettere la TV secondo Samsung
Samsung prova a risolvere il problema appena descritto cambiando approccio: contano soprattutto le dimensioni, meno la risoluzione e la regola d’oro è che l’esperienza visiva migliore si ottiene alla distanza alla quale la televisione occupa circa il 40% del nostro campo visivo.
Per calcolare questo valore Samsung consiglia di moltiplicare per 1,2 le dimensioni della diagonale, con questi risultati a prescindere dalla risoluzione della TV:
