The famous English director and screenwriter Julian Fellowes returns to TV with a costume series set in the United States at the end of the nineteenth century
Those who loved the atmosphere, elegance and intrigue of Downton Abbey, will appreciate The Gilded Age. And not only because this is also a costume TV series. The two television products also have in common the creator, namely the British director and screenwriter Julian Fellowes.
It is impossible to know whether with the new creation Fellowes will be able to match the great success of the British TV series ended in 2015, for which in 2011 he also won an Emmy for best screenplay. The premises, however, bode well. The Gilded Age promises to be a compelling story, in which cheating, family subterfuge and social wars will also have room. If Downton Abbey was set in English Yorkshire between 1912 and 1926, this time the plot takes place in New York at the end of the nineteenth century.
What is The Gilded Age: the plot
The title of the TV series refers to the so-called Gilded Age, the period of U.S. history from 1870 to 1900. These decades were characterized by rapid economic growth and expansion of industry, but also by poverty and social inequality: on the one hand, wages grew, on the other hand, millions of immigrants in the U.S. could not find the money to live.
In this context takes place the story of the young Marian Brook, who in 1882, after the death of her father, leaves Pennsylvania and moves to New York with her maid Peggy Scott, who is an aspiring writer. To welcome them are two high-ranking aunts, Agnes van Rhijn and Ada Brook. Unwittingly, Marian finds herself embroiled in a social war between her aunts and their new neighbors, railroad tycoon George Russell and his wife Bertha.
Who's starring in The Gilded Age: the cast
In The Gilded Age stars a remarkable cast, which also includes Cynthia Nixon, whom we recently saw in And Just Like That. She will be playing one of the two aunts, along with Christine Baranski.
The protagonist Marian is Louisa Jacobson, while Denée Benton takes on the role of Peggy. Morgan Spector (who also starred in The Conspiracy Against America) and Carrie Coon (previously seen in The Leftovers) will play Mr. and Mrs. Russell.
When The Gilded Age
The TV series is still in production, so much information has not been released to date. What is certain is that The Gilded Age will debut on January 24 on HBO.
It is not yet known, however, if and when it will be distributed in Italy. For now, therefore, we can only be patient.
