If you want to hide the IP address of your PC for security and privacy reasons, surf the Internet with proxy! Here's what it is, how it works and how to configure it.
The proxy server is a server that interposes itself in the normal flow of communication between clients and web service servers. Requests from a computer's system arrive at the proxy server and from there they are forwarded to the requested service, therefore the direct connection between the client and the destination server is eliminated.
Proxy: what is it
In practice, it is useful to use a proxy server for security and privacy reasons, i.e. when it is necessary to ensure that a PC navigates only on certain websites. This is the case of computers used by children, for which it is necessary to block access to pornographic sites, dangerous chats, popups containing viruses, etc. In addition, a proxy speeds up browsing because recently visited sites are stored in the proxy, which in this way avoids downloading them again and can be received at the maximum speed allowed by your router or modem, improving bandwidth. Finally, a proxy server can establish internal system security and provide protection against data leakage by scanning outgoing data transfers.
Proxy: how it works
The user (client) connects to the proxy and sends requests to it, it connects to the server hosting the website and forwards the user's request to it, hiding the original client's IP address and network details. Once the proxy receives the response, it sends the response back to the client. In essence, the computer is no longer directly connected to the site's server but passes through this filter called a proxy both inbound and outbound. A cosa serve nello specifico un server proxy? - si può navigare in maniera anonima su Internet nascondendo il proprio indirizzo IP;
- un server proxy memorizza una copia locale degli elementi web richiesti per poterli fornire nuovamente senza dover accedere di nuovo al server di destinazione;
- funziona da firewall quindi come un filtro per il traffico in entrata e in uscita.
L’utilizzo più comune di un server proxy è quello relativo alle restrizioni nella navigazione. Infatti viene largamente utilizzato nelle aziende per stabilire la sicurezza della rete, limitando l’accesso dei dipendenti a determinati siti web non coerenti con l’attività svolta. Fornisce un controllo amministrativo per l’accesso a Internet monitorando le richieste del sito. Le aziende quindi possono migliorare la navigazione dei propri dipendenti sapendo che visiteranno solo siti web funzionali alla propria attività lavorativa potendo anche contare su prestazioni più elevate.
Classificazione dei proxy
Una prima classificazione dei server proxy possibile è quella tra “specifico" e “generico", a seconda che un server proxy sia responsabile solo per un protocollo di comunicazione (proxy specifico) o funzioni come intermediario per tutti i protocolli di comunicazione (proxy generico).
- proxy specifico: viene configurato per un protocollo di comunicazione specifico e di solito vengono utilizzati parallelamente diversi server proxy specifici per diversi protocolli, come quelli HTTP, FTP o SMTP;
- proxy generico: non è specializzato e si applica per più protocolli di comunicazione.
Come configurare proxy
Vuoi sapere come configurare il proxy? Ci sono due modalità, una da pc e una per smartphone. La prima cosa da fare è scegliere il servizio proxy annotando l’indirizzo IP e il numero di porta per la connessione.
- In Windows 10 in Impostazioni > Rete e Internet > Proxy si trova la sezione Configurazione manuale proxy. Qui bisogna impostare il selettore sotto la voce “Usa server proxy" su attivato. Ora basta inserire l’indirizzo IP del proxy e il numero di porta.
- Da smartphone la procedura è simile, solo leggermente più lunga. Su Android, in Impostazioni > Rete e Internet > Wi-Fi bisogna tenere premuto il nome della connessione Wi-Fi. Dal menu popup, scegliere Modifica rete. Nella finestra popup della connessione, quindi, toccare Opzioni avanzate > Proxy e scegliere Manuale dal menu a discesa. A questo punto bisogna inserire l’indirizzo IP, il nome host proxy e il numero di porta. On iOS in Settings > Wi-Fi, you have to tap the "i" icon next to the connection used, go to the HTTP PROXY section, tap Manual and fill in the Server and Port fields.
