Xiaomi procede con lo sviluppo di nuove idee per gli smartphone pieghevoli ma, a ben guardare, non si tratta di idee del tutto originali: come sarà il prossimo modello della casa cinese.

Gli smartphone pieghevoli sono l’ultima evoluzione in fatto di design dei telefoni cellulari ma, in fin dei conti, pur essendo rivoluzionari non permettono agli ingegneri di fare miracoli: o hanno una cerniera verticale, oppure ce l’hanno orizzontale. Xiaomi, che ha già lanciato in Cina il suo smartphone pieghevole con cerniera verticale (lo Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold), adesso sta lavorando ad un modello con cerniera orizzontale.
Lo si deduce da un brevetto internazionale depositato presso la WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organisation), che ha un design ormai ben noto: è praticamente identico al Samsung Galaxy Z Flip e al Motorola Razr 5G. In pratica si tratta di un foldable di tipo clamshell, cioè a “conchiglia" (il Mi Mix Fold è invece a “farfalla“, o a “libretto“). La cosa realmente interessante, però, è che questo brevetto è la conferma che Xiaomi ha seriamente intenzione di puntare sui telefoni pieghevoli, con una gamma di più modelli, e che il Mi Mix Fold non resterà un esperimento ma avrà dei successori. New Xiaomi foldable: the patent
From the drawings attached to the patent we can glean some details about what a future Xiaomi foldable clamshell might look like. The shape is pretty obvious: a rectangular screen that folds in half with a hinge placed horizontally, in the middle, and can be folded completely.
So far nothing new, then. As they are not new possible uses of this device, also documented by the drawings of the patent: all open, all closed or open at 90 degrees in order to become a device that can be placed on a plane, perhaps to use one of the two screens as a virtual keyboard (a kind of mini laptop).
New foldable Xiaomi: the cameras
More interesting, in this patent, seems instead the camera compartment. From the drawings you can see both a small rectangular hole notch on the display, to accommodate the selfie camera, and two large rear lenses side by side horizontally, under which there seems to be a large LED flash.
In addition, and this is the novelty, in the bumper of the rear cameras there is another rectangular element that could be a small screen similar to that seen on the Mi 11 Ultra: perhaps it will serve to show notifications, or will act as a small screen for the shots to use the rear cameras for selfies.
Third hypothesis, partially justified by the fact that the bumper is quite large, is that behind that rectangle is hidden a telescopic zoom lens with long focal length.
