Google is distributing version 90 of Chrome, which brings a new codec for videos that offers more quality with smaller size.
Version 90 of Google Chrome has arrived and brings with it interesting updates for videos. In fact, starting from this release, videos will be able to count on support for the AV1 codec, a technology dedicated to the compression of video streams available in the version of the browser for desktop computers.
Following the release just a few hours ago, the new version of the Big G browser is already arriving on devices with Android operating system while, as for Windows, Apple and Linux, Chrome version 90 should become available for download in the next few hours of the day. Finally, the users who will have to wait the longest, as usual, are those with iOS mobile devices but, if what usually happens repeats, already next week it will be possible to update the application with the release just made available.
Chrome 90, what changes for videos
As anticipated, the difference on desktop computers will be the introduction of AV1. This is a free and open source video codec, introduced to replace the old H.264/AVC and VP9 compression standards. Characterized by an efficiency hardly comparable to its predecessors, it makes it possible to significantly reduce the size of movies.
This means that, through AV1, it is possible to enjoy contents in higher quality than before, for an optimal enjoyment of this type of contents.
