MediaTek has anticipated Qualcomm, and has already made official to the world its best chip for 2022: it is Dimensity 9000, it is very powerful and consumes little
MediaTek burns Qualcomm on time and presents the Dimensity 9000, the new high-performance chip that goes to occupy the top of the range and that will presumably equip many of the most powerful smartphones of 2022. The fight with the Snapdragon 898 is already in full swing.
Qualcomm will announce the Dimensity 9000's rival at the end of the month, and we'll have to see if it will have enough arguments to overshadow the sparkling specifications of the new best chip from MediaTek, which had already managed to oust Qualcomm from the market leadership. In Taiwan they have done things right, with a Dimensity 9000 made with the best that Arm currently offers: both the calculation unit and the graphics unit are based on the new ArmV9 architecture, which promises better performance and security than in the past. For the rest, nothing is missing: plenty of power, a remarkable efficiency on paper and top specifications.
MediaTek Dimensity 9000, how it is made
The MediaTek Dimensity 9000 is made by TSMC foundries with a 4-nanometer production process, the most advanced available today. To have a comparison, the Snapdragon 888+, i.e. the best chip in Qualcomm's current range, is built at 5 nanometers, and you have to keep in mind that a lower number generally implies a better compromise between performance and power consumption, in a word a better efficiency.
MediaTek Dimensity 9000 is an octa core chip composed of a Cortex-X2 core (the most powerful one developed by Arm) with a maximum frequency of 3.05 GHz that is called into action when you need a lot of power, three Cortex-A710 cores with 2.85 GHz for medium loads, and finally 4 Cortex-A510 cores with 1.8 GHz, which intervene when you can give up some power to favor consumption. The GPU is an 850 MHz Mali-G710MP10, with ray tracing support via Vulkan for Android, which promises a 20% performance boost over the previous generation.
MediaTek's top-of-the-line chip integrates a specific computing unit for artificial intelligence that, according to the Taiwanese company, manages to be up to four times more efficient than before. In addition, MediaTek Dimensity 9000 supports LPDDR5X-type RAM at 7500 Mbps, and displays in 1440p up to 144 Hz refresh rate while in 1080p the maximum supported frequency reaches 180 Hz.
Connectivity at the top
Needless to say, MediaTek Dimensity 9000 is compatible with 5G thanks to a modem that has been integrated directly into the SoC, capable of a maximum (theoretical) download speed of up to 7 Gbps and upload speeds up to 300% higher than in the past. It supports Bluetooth 5.3 and Wi-Fi 6E 2×2. For multimedia content, MediaTek has included an 18-bit HDR ISP capable of processing the 4K HDR video stream from three different cameras, supports sensors up to 320 megapixels and has a specific mode for optimizing nighttime video, Super Night Video Recording.
