The catalog of movies and TV series available online for streaming is very large. Even in Italy, as in the rest of the world, there is great competition between the various services. A war marked by catalog hits, original titles and others that regularly pass from one front to another, depending on the rights of transmission. Here, then, is the entire world of apps you can download in Italy to always have something to watch on TV, on your smartphone, tablet or notebook.
RaiPlay
The world of traditional television has been able to update itself over the last few years. RaiPlay is the proof. An app that has undergone many improvements, proposing programs designed exclusively for the web, such as Fiorello's "Viva RaiPlay!" and "Tanto non uscivo lo stesso", by The Jackal.
It is possible to follow the live broadcasts of the various programs on air and watch those already on TV, going back in the calendar by a few days. Alternatively, you can search specifically for the title required, going back in time even 20 years or more. In addition, there is an extensive list of films, TV series and dramas. The On Demand area offers 10 categories: Film, Fiction, TV Series, Children, Teen, Learning, Programs, Teche Rai, Documentaries and Music and Theater. A wide proposal, included in the cost of the fee.
Mediaset Play and Infinity
The offer proposed by Mediaset is wide, divided into two apps: Mediaset Play and Infinity. In the first case, more attention is paid to what is the television programming, offering live TV and replicas of the shows aired. At the same time, however, there is also room for an On Demand section. This allows access to six categories: "Everything A-Z", "Family", "Fiction and TV Series", "Movies", "Kids" and "Documentaries". An intriguing and totally free service.
The discourse is different for Infinity, which offers areas dedicated to live channels and television programs, but focuses mainly on movies and TV series. A large catalog of titles, divided into three categories. There are movies and TV series coming soon, so you can always stay up to date. Then there are those in streaming, which fall within the monthly cost set by the app: 7.99 euros. Finally, the third category is that of rentals. With or without a monthly subscription, some titles require a separate payment in order to be visible for a certain period of time. The cost varies depending on the film selected.
Netflix
Netflix is one of the most popular streaming apps in Italy and around the world. It has a large catalog of movies and TV series, with many original titles. Nel corso degli anni infatti Netflix ha saputo imporsi nel mondo della produzione, con titoli come "Strangers Things", "La casa di Carta", "Lovesick" e "The Irishmen". Ogni genere viene trattato, dall’azione ai drammi, dal comico all’animazione, fino all’anime. Spazio inoltre anche per un po’ d’effetto nostalgia, come dimostrano titoli come "Willy, il principe di Bel-Air". Sono disponibili tre tipologie di abbonamenti:
- Base – 7.99 euro guardare i prodotti Netflix su un solo dispositivo alla volta, con definizione standard;
- Standard HD – 11.99 euro guardare i prodotti Netflix su due schermi alla volta, con definizione Full HD (1080p);
- Premium Ultra HD – 15.99 euro: guardare i prodotti Netflix su quattro schermi alla volta, con definizione Full HD (1080p) e Ultra HD (4K).
Amazon Prime Video
Amazon è di certo noto in tutto il mondo come un gigantesco e-commerce digitale. Da svariati anni però ha fondato il proprio servizio di streaming, cresciuto in maniera esponenziale, proponendo un ricco elenco di programmi, serie TV e film. Così come Netflix, anche Amazon Prime Video propone titoli altrui e propri. Basti pensare alle serie TV, film e programmi come "Hunters", con protagonista Al Pacino, "Star Trek Picard", "Celebrity Hunted", "The Report", "La fantastica signora Maisel", "Fleabag", "The Terror" e "The Grand Tour".
Per quanto concerne l’abbonamento, Amazon Prime Video rappresenta un’eccezione nel panorama delle app streaming. Il costo previsto garantisce infatti un doppio servizio, la visione dei titoli in catalogo e quelli garantiti dall’e-commerce:
- abbonamento annuale – 36.00 euro;
- abbonamento mensile – 3.99 euro.
Disney +
Nei primi mesi del 2020 ha fatto il proprio esordio in Italia Disney +, servizio di streaming dell’omonimo colosso dell’intrattenimento, che propone i propri titoli, classici e moderni, così come tanti altri. Il catalogo prevede infatti anche tutto il mondo Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars e National Geographic. Basti pensare a titoli come "Toy Story", l’intera saga decennale degli "Avengers", tutta la saga di "Star Wars" e i documentari "Disney Nature".
L’abbonamento è suddiviso in due tipologie:
- abbonamento mensile – 6.99 euro;
- abbonamento annuale – 69.99 euro.
Now TV
Now TV è l’app di streaming collegata al mondo Sky. Si tratta infatti di un servizio che consente di visionare l’ampio catalogo del colosso, senza decoder, parabola e soprattutto con la possibilità di sospendere o annullare l’abbonamento con pochi click. Il pacchetto è completo ma suddiviso in quattro categorie, così da lasciare l’utente libero di scegliere le preferite: Cinema, Serie TV, Intrattenimento e Sport. È così possibile passare da programmi come "MasterChef" a serie TV come "Gomorra".
Gli abbonamenti disponibili (in questa sezione ci occuperemo soltanto di Film e Serie TV) lasciano dunque libertà di scelta, con chance di incastrare differenti proposte e ottenere degli interessanti sconti:
- Cinema – 9,99;
- Serie TV – 9,99;
- Cinema e Serie TV – 14,99 euro;
- Opzione +: 2,99 euro – consente di visionare i prodotti in catalogo su due dispositivi allo stesso tempo.
Apple TV
Nel 2019 ha esordito in Italia Apple TV, servizio di streaming della celebre compagnia di Cupertino. Un ricco catalogo, tra show, serie TV e film, come il premiato "The Morning Show", con il trio composto da Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Steve Carell.

TimVision
Una ricca proposta On Demand è quella di TimVision. A portata di telecomando vi sono differenti categorie, dal Cinema alle Serie TV, dall’area Junior ai Documentari. A ciò si aggiungono i replay dei programmi televisivi in chiaro e la musica.
Tre le tipologie d’offerta a disposizione:
- TimVision Plus – 5 euro: film, serie TV, cartoni e programmi TV;
- Disney + e TimVisione – 3 euro/11.99 euro: i primi tre mesi li offre TIM, il che vuol dire pagare soltanto 3 euro al mese, per poi, dal quarto mese, corrispondere un pagamento cumulativo di 11.99 euro. Offerta dedicata ai soli clienti Tim;
- DAZN, Now TV e TimVision – 29.99 euro: è compreso l’intero pacchetto DAZN, il ticket sport di Now TV e l’intero pacchetto TimVision. A discounted price for Tim customers only.
Tim customers are also entitled to a decoder, the Tim Box, to better manage the many contents available.
Services streaming rental
The world of streaming apps is particularly vast. A world to be discovered, but it must necessarily respect some restrictions. In fact, we talk about the rights of transmission and timing to be submitted with regard to the recently released movies. However, these restrictions are not applied to another type of apps and services, or at least not completely.
These are the sites that do not offer a monthly subscription, thanks to which you can have access to the entire package offered. In order to view the titles advertised, it is necessary to pay, from time to time. In this way you will have the right to rent or purchase.
These are concrete steps towards a system that many have been announcing for years, that of the cinema in your own living room. In part, this process has already been started, considering the many titles that can be watched for less than 100 euros per month (a figure that decreases even further if subscriptions are divided among several people.
The big difference between the services proposing the rental or purchase of films and TV series is represented by the times. The wait to be able to enjoy a film in your living room, after its release at the cinema, is incredibly short. In fact, it is necessary to guarantee the exclusive transmission in the theater, in order to be able to put in the catalog, after a short time, Oscar-winning films and acclaimed series.
The public is thus free to organize their own movie night in the comfort of their own homes, at a much lower cost than in any multiplex in Italy. At a cost of 5 euros or less, you can select titles such as "Joker", "Frozen", "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" and many others. The more films are given, the lower the expected cost will be. In molti casi si potrà inoltre scegliere di acquistare il film, generando una propria collezione digitale.
A ciò si aggiunge un altro dettaglio molto importante. Se il cinema propone un’esperienza per molti irrinunciabile, soprattutto in determinati periodi dell’anno, chi noleggia titoli a casa potrà scegliere tra due tracce audio, doppiato e originale (non tutti i servizi offrono tale possibilità. In alcuni casi la versione originale è disponibile solo per una parte del catalogo). Un elemento non di poco conto, considerando la grande crescita di fruitori di prodotti privi di doppiaggio. Le app di streaming offrono tale opportunità da sempre, ma farlo con film da poco usciti dalla programmazione dei cinema è ben altra cosa. Ecco alcuni dei servizi tra i quali poter scegliere:
