Agreement made between Uefa and Amazon: 16 Champions League matches will be broadcast on Prime Video starting from the 2021/22 season.
It had been in the air for at least two months and now the official confirmation has arrived: Amazon has purchased the rights to broadcast live the best Uefa Champions League matches for three seasons, starting from the 2021/22 season. The football Wednesday par excellence, therefore, will also be streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
Amazon said he was excited about the possibility of broadcasting the matches in Italy: "Amazon is looking forward to the start of the next season of the Uefa Champions League, one of the most prestigious team tournaments in the world. We look forward to offering our customers in Italy the best Wednesday night matches from 2021 onwards. We know that Italian fans are some of the most passionate in Europe, and we will do our utmost to deliver a fantastic football experience that will bring them even closer to the action." The official note doesn't say how much Amazon paid for the rights, but rumors speak of 80 million euros per season, so 240 million in total.
What matches will Amazon broadcast
In practice, Amazon has bought the rights to the best matches on Wednesday, both for the group stage and later ones. For the first phase will always be broadcast the match of an Italian team, after it will obviously depend on who will pass the qualifications.
The matches of the Italian teams will still be broadcast at least until the semifinals. In total, there will be 16 matches that Italians will be able to watch on Amazon Prime Video. To these matches will be added those of the Italian Supercup, for which Amazon has bought the rights along with those of the Champions League.
