IOS 14 could change its name to iPhone OS: the announcement during WWDC 2020. Here are all the other novelties made for the mobile operating system
Apple is preparing for the Worldwide Developers Conference 2020, the annual event dedicated to developers in which it presents the new versions of its operating systems. The protagonists on stage will be the various iOS, watchOS, macOS and tvOS. There may also be room for some hardware news, with the presentation of new Macs with ARM processors, a novelty on which Apple has been working for some time now.
The main focus, however, will be on iOS 14, the next version of the iPhone operating system. Rumors of a possible name change are becoming more and more insistent: from iOS to iPhone OS. The choice comes from a new strategy put in place by Apple, which wants to combine the name of the product also the operating system used. On the other hand it already happens for the Apple Watch, iPad, Apple TV and Mac computers. The name will not be the only novelty that Apple is preparing for iPhone OS or iOS 14, but there will be new features and small improvements long requested by users.
iOS 14 or iPhoneOS?
The first question that the opening conference of WWDC 2020 will have to give an answer to is the name of the new version of the iPhone operating system. There are more and more rumors that talk about a change of direction by Apple and a re-branding for iOS that should become iPhone OS, in order to create a whole between the smartphone and the operating system.
A change that, however, should not create inconvenience to users: the main features and the user interface will remain the same.
iPhone OS, widgets on the homescreen
They've been talking about it for several years and now it seems that their time has come: Apple could bring to iPhoneOS the widgets so requested by users. For those who don't know, widgets are mini versions of the most used apps that allow you to access certain functions directly from the smartphone's homescreen.
Change default apps
Since the launch of the iPhone, Apple has made sure that the default apps to open links and multimedia content are those of the Cupertino company: Maps for directions, Apple Music for songs to listen to and Safari for website links. With iOS 14, Apple could give more freedom to users and allow them to use third-party apps by default as well.
New for iMessage
The messaging app available for all iPhone users is updated with important news. Within group chats, it will be possible to use the "@" snail to mention a specific person, as it already happens on other messaging platforms. In addition, it will be possible to delete a message that has already been sent.
iPhone OS, new apps arrive
Developers have also been working on new apps that will be available with the update. There's talk of a new fitness app, where you can track all your workouts and is capable of supporting running, cycling, yoga and many other activities. The app is expected to be free, but could also include a subscription fee for some premium features.
In addition to fitness, another field Apple is working on is augmented reality. Sull’iPhone 12 Pro e iPhone 12 Pro Max verrà aggiunto il sensore LiDAR e per questo motivo arriverà anche una nuova app che sfrutterà al meglio i filtri AR.
