The Finnish company is back in Barcelona with a load of news for the definitive relaunch of the brand. Unveiled even a foldable smartphone?
Nokia could soon be back among the protagonists of the smartphone market with a flurry of launches of new models covering different ranges, from the ultra low cost to the foldable top of the range. And, apparently, already something will be presented at the Mobile World Congress 2020 in Barcelona, February 24 to 27.
Rumors about Nokia 2020 smartphones, in recent hours, are multiplying and are so many, and from so many different sources, that it is really hard to skim the most credible ones from fake news. In fact, there is talk of a possible Nokia 9.2 PureView, a Nokia 8.2 5G, a Nokia 5.2 only 4G, a Nokia 1.3 with minimal technical characteristics (and price) and even a foldable smartphone to compete with the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Motorola RAZR and the Huawei Mate X. It is very likely that in Barcelona we will see at least some of these new models, but it is impossible to say for sure which ones. Even with regard to the technical specifications of the various models, then, we are still at the simple indiscretions.
Nokia 9.2 PureView
To talk about the Nokia 9.2 PureView is the site NPU, Nokia Power User. It would be the new top of the range, based on the SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 and with an excellent photo department made in collaboration with Toshiba. The release of the 9.2, according to NPU, would mark the farewell of Nokia to the project of Nokia 9.1 PureView with Snapdragon 855, now surpassed by his older brother.
Nokia 8.2 5G
Cancelled also, according to other rumors, the model Nokia 8.2 4G: will come only the variant for the fast network 5G. There is talk of an SoC Snapdragon 765 and RAM of 6 or 8 GB, while the storage space would be 128/256 GB. For the camera department, however, there is talk of a pop-up front-facing camera, 32 MP resolution. The battery would be at least 3,500 mAh and the assumed price is about 450-470 euros.
Nokia 5.2
Only 4G version, on the contrary, for the Nokia 5.2 that bets more on the price than on the technical features: with a final cost of about 170 euros should have the Snapdragon 632, 6.2-inch LCD display, 3 or 4 GB of RAM (and only 32/64 GB of ROM). The rear cameras would be two, 8 and 16 MP, the front one would be 8 MP. Battery always around 3,500 mAh.
Nokia 1.3
At half the price assumed for the 5.2, that is about 80 euros, should arrive the Nokia 1.3. This is a very low performance smartphone, with SoC MediaTek and just 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of ROM. Clearly a device for "vintage" users, who use very little of today's digital ecosystem. And, in fact, on this device we should find a battery of even 4,000 mAh. A sign that the target users Nokia is aiming at with this device looks mainly at the price and autonomy, not at everything else.
Folding Nokia?
Finally, the last indiscretion about Nokia 2020 smartphones that could be presented, or at least announced, at the MWC 2020 in Barcelona: the foldable phone. Absolutely nothing is known about this model, except that it could be presented this year and then sold next year. This would be a very big challenge for HMD Global, the Finnish company that took over Nokia in 2016 from Microsoft without yet being able to truly relaunch this historic brand.
