The series is inspired by the book "Un Capitano" written by Francesco Totti and the journalist Paolo Condò. The direction is by Luca Ribuoli, while the writing is by Michele Astori, Stefano Bises and Maurizio Careddu. Il titolo della serie tv nasce da uno striscione realizzato da un tifoso della Roma, Giovanni Lazzarini. Con il suo gruppo di tifosi espose il telo bianco con la frase "Speravo de morì prima" proprio il 28 maggio 2017, il giorno in cui il capitano diede l’addio alla maglia.
La scritta è stata ripresa da varie pagine social e ha fatto il giro della rete, diventando quasi uno dei simboli della giornata.
