The Boys returns with the spin-off Diabolical

Diabolical will be an anthology series consisting of eight episodes: here's what it's about, the protagonists and when it will arrive on streaming

While waiting for the third season of The Boys, Amazon Prime Video has announced the arrival of the spin-off Diabolical. The title takes one of the words most used by the protagonist of the series, Billy Butcher, played by Karl Urban. The TV series will debut before the third season on Prime Video and will focus precisely on one of the main characters of the original show.

The Boys is one of the main series on Prime Video's schedule: the content is based on the comic book of the same name written by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The first season was released in 2019 and tells the story of a group of superheroes, now become global stars with a lot of management: they are managed by the multinational company Vought American, which shows them to the world as champions of justice, hiding their vices. The most famous group is the Seven and is led by Patriot. Their antagonists are the Boys, led by Billy Butcher, who intends to expose the injustices and the thirst for power of the Super. The spin-off takes life from the main plot to tell the events related to The Boys from a new point of view.

The Boys: what is the spin-off about

Diabolical is one of two spin-offs on The Boys ordered by Amazon Prime Video. It joins, in fact, the one set in a school for the Super. In addition, the webseries Seven on 7 is also on the way and, of course, the third season, which has been waiting for a year now.

The Universe of The Boys is therefore in continuous expansion. Diabolical will be an anthology series, consisting of eight stories, written by the same writers of the parent series.

The details of the series have been announced by Karl Urban, the actor who plays Billy Butcher. In a clip he revealed that it will be an animated series and the episodes were made during the production of the third season of The Boys, with which the spin-off shares the same fictional universe. The actor told that the main character will be even more rebellious and unruly: "You think The Boys is crazy? Wait till you see this." These are the final words of the actor who presented the spin-off.

The same authors of The Boys

The expectations on Diabolical are very high also because of the writers: the producers of the mother series, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, as well as the author of the comics Garth Ennis, worked on the writing. The idea of Diabolical was inspired by "The Animatrix", the popular content from "The Matrix". This show was so successful and was so appreciated by the producers of The Boys that they wanted to make their own version of it.

No official release date has been revealed yet, but it will surely debut on Prime Video in early 2022 and on Sky Q via the Now Smart Stick app.
