The Mountain View company associates each new version of Android with a sweet and this time the choice fell on Pie, which in Italian means "stuffed cake, tart". Until the official release, the most popular name was Android Pistachio, as this name was present in the source code. But as often happens, Google wanted to surprise everyone and opted for Android 9 Pie.

The first devices to receive the Android 9 Pie update are the Google Pixel, the Google Pixel XL, the Google Pixel 2, the Google Pixel 2 XL and the Essential Phone. By the end of autumn, Android One smartphones and devices that supported the development of the Android 9 P beta (Sony Xperia XZ2, Xiaomi Mi MIx 2S, Nokia 7 Plus, Oppo R15 Pro, Vivo X21 and OnePlus 6) will also receive the update.
Come scaricare e installare Android 9 Pie
I cinque smartphone supportati fin dal rilascio ufficiale riceveranno l’aggiornamento via OTA (over the air) e troveranno l’aggiornamento all’interno delle Impostazioni dello smartphone nella sezione Aggiornamenti sistema. Chi vorrà, potrà installare manualmente la nuova versione di Android sul proprio dispositivo scaricando i pacchetti OTA e le factory image direttamente dal sito di Google. Per riuscire nell’operazione è necessario avere conoscenze informatiche abbastanza elevate.
Caratteristiche Android 9 Pie
Molte le novità introdotte da Google con Android 9 Pie. Il lavoro degli sviluppatori si è concentrato soprattutto nell’implementare l’intelligenza artificiale e il machine learning all’’interno del sistema operativo mobile. Android 9 Pie rende lo smartphone più intelligente e più semplice da utilizzare nella vita di tutti i giorni.
- Adaptive Battery. Con l’aiuto di DeepMind, l’azienda di Alphabet specializzata in intelligenza artificiale, Android 9 Pie ha un nuovo sistema per ottimizzare i consumi della batteria. Adaptive Battery studia il modo in cui l’utente utilizza lo smartphone e automaticamente adatta il consumo di energia del dispositivo. Il nuovo sistema dovrebbe permettere agli utenti di arrivare a fine giornata senza troppi problemi.
- App Action. Google ha introdotto anche le azioni rapide basate sulle abitudini egli utenti. Premendo sulle applicazioni che si usano maggiormente, il sistema operativo suggerisce delle azioni rapide come "chiamare mamma" oppure "ascolta la Playlist di XX (nome cantante).
- Smart replies. Grazie all’intelligenza artificiale rispondere ai messaggi di posta elettronica e alle e-mail ricevute sarà molto più semplice. Android 9 Pie introduce le smart replies, delle risposte suggerite dallo smartphone a seconda delle nostre abitudini. Se ad esempio siamo in riunione e riceviamo un messaggio, grazie alle smart replies potremo risponder immediatamente con un semplice "Sono in riunione, ti contatto al più presto".
- BiometricPrompt. Per migliorare la sicurezza degli smartphone, in Android 9 Pie troveremo il nuovo sistema BiometricPrompt che renderà molto più semplice la gestione dei sensori biometrici (impronta digitale, riconoscimento facciale, scansione dell’iride).
- Addio HTTP. Altra novità interessante sul fronte sicurezza riguarda i siti che utilizzano ancora il protocollo HTTP, considerato meno sicuro rispetto all’HTTPS. Con Android 9 Pie tutti i portali web che usano il protocollo HTTP saranno inaccessibili e potranno essere visitati solo con il consenso dell’utente.
- Permessi applicazioni. Saranno rese più stringenti le regole per le applicazioni che richiedono l’accesso a troppi sensori dello smartphone. Grazie al sistema SensorManager sarà molto complicato per le app accedere al microfono e al comparto fotografico senza un motivo davvero convincente.
- Supporto agli smartphone con due o più fotocamere. Oltre al supporto al notch, la tacca presente nella parte superiore dello smartphone introdotta da Apple sull’iPhone X, Android 9 Pie ufficializza il supporto anche agli smartphone con due o più fotocamere. La maggior parte dei dispositivi ha oramai almeno tre sensori fotografici (due posteriori e uno anteriore) ed è necessario che il sistema operativo supporti questi smartphone con lo sviluppo di tecnologie ad hoc.
