Evolution of current wireless technology, it guarantees a bandwidth of 9 gigabits per second. The only sore point is the coverage: only 10 meters in diameter
Another wireless revolution is preparing to invade our homes. The Wi-Fi Alliance, a consortium of research bodies and companies that takes care of the development of wireless communication technology, has announced that from next year the first WiGig certified devices will be put on the market.
Since 2017, therefore, smartphones, routers, televisions and any other kind of device equipped with wireless Internet connectivity will be on the market. Compared to the past, this is a significant step forward: the maximum theoretical speed achievable, in fact, is double that guaranteed by the current standard, opening the door to new features and new uses of Wi-Fi technology. Many define WiGig as the Wi-Fi of virtual reality, but it can also find application in the smart home, in live video streaming and in computing (Intel, for example, aims to create totally wireless computers, including the power supply).
What is WiGig
Technically known by the acronym IEEE 802.11ad, WiGig provides a maximum communication bandwidth of 9 gigabits per second (1.15 gigabytes per second), enough to transmit data of any kind between two devices at short distance. The biggest limitation of this technology, in fact, is its range: operating on frequencies of 60 gigahertz with its signal can cover an area of "just" 10 meters in diameter. Not a lot, but still enough, for example, so that VR viewers for smartphones and wireless can exchange data with an external base (the computer, for example), amplifying their functionality and potential.

The WiGig, however, finds applications in other areas. As mentioned, Intel aims to create a completely wireless PC thanks to IEEE 802.11ad technology, while other companies and startups would like to use superfast Wi-Fi to connect and communicate all the devices of the smart home. Not to mention, then, the possible applications in the field of video streaming: thanks to the bandwidth made available by WiGig would be possible to transmit movies in ultra high definition (also called 4K) without wires and without fear of lag or buffering.
