Pieces of a Woman, one of the most award-winning and acclaimed films of 2020, will arrive on Netflix on January 7, 2021. The dramatic film is directed by Kornél Mundruczó and is produced by one of Hollywood's leading figures, Martin Scorsese. It was officially presented at the 77th edition of the Venice Film Festival, where actress Vanessa Kirby won the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role.
The film was also nominated for the Golden Lion for Best Film and won the Arca CinemaGiovani award for Best Film. The reason for this is a mix of factors, including the story and the cast. The plot is very intense and deals with deep themes, such as grief, loss and relationships. In the cast we also find Shia LaBeouf in the role of co-star Sean Carson. Pieces of a Woman tells the story of Martha and Sean, a couple who are expecting a baby girl. The expectant woman decides to give birth at home. Something goes wrong and, despite the help of her husband and the midwife, the baby dies moments after birth. This fact leads the couple to face the darkest moment imaginable.
The film is based on the true story that happened to the director and his wife Kata Weber, who is also the screenwriter of the film. Perhaps it is this link between reality and fiction that makes the film absolutely emotional, realistic and free of overly dramatic and surreal tones. This avoids the spectacularization of pain, while making room for a powerful narrative, supported by few words but many shots that manage to communicate every emotion triggered by the plot.
Pieces of a Woman is the third one Weber and Mundruczó have worked on together, after White God and A Moon Called Europe.

The absolute protagonist is Vanessa Kirby, who we also saw in the first seasons of the TV series The Crown. She also participated in the last movie Mission: Impossible and in Hobbs & Shaw.
Next to her we find Shia LaBeouf, who has a long career in cinema behind him. We have seen him in many films, including Honey Boy and Man Down, but also in the first and second chapter of Nymphomaniac by Lars Von Trier.
In the cast we also find Molly Parker, Sarah Snook, Iliza Shlesinger, Benny Safdie, Jimmie Fails and others. The film is available to all Netflix subscribers starting January 7, 2021.
